History
The Madame Tussauds museum was started by Anna Maria Grosholtz born in Strasbourg, France in the 18th century. Her mother was the housekeeper of a Swiss physician who knew waxwork. She learnt her trade from him.
Her first figure was of Voltaire in 1777. Among her own famous figures are Jean-Jacque Rousseau, and Benjamin Franklin.
After the death of the doctor she inherited his personal collection of wax statues. That’s how her exhibit was started. She started travelling with her figures around Europe. The name Tussaud she took from her husband- Francois Tussaud.
In 1831 she moved to London where she had her first permanent venue on Baker Street. In 1883 the museum moved to its current location Marylebone Road. In 1889 the museum was sold to a group of businessmen and left the Tussaud’s family control. Ever since the museum has had huge success.
